Before we ventured to Portugal, people who had already visited couldn’t stop gushing about their love for this charming country. They claimed that it’s the kind of place that pulls you back time and time again. I was skeptical, but after spending 7 days in Portugal, I have to admit the hype is real. This place is filled with some truly beautiful places.
We only had 7 days in Portugal, but we packed in SO much!!! It’s crazy that we managed to fit in even more cool spots than planned. And here’s the thing, it’s the kind of timeframe that seems like it would barely scratch the surface but my FOMO knows no bounds! Here’s the ultimate guide on everything you need to know to start planning your 7 days in Portugal including the most incredible hidden gems, charming towns and colorful landmarks.
*We did rent a car during our time here, so we could cover more ground and some of the spots I share below will only be accessible by car but don’t worry because I am sharing some amazing tour options as well!

Renting a car in Portugal is straightforward. Start by booking online here for the best rates. Ensure you have a valid driver’s license, passport, and a credit card for the rental deposit. Upon arrival, pick up your car at the airport or a city location, review the rental agreement, and inspect the vehicle for any existing damage.
Portugal has a lot of roundabouts, but don’t worry! Navigating them is easy when you know how. Some highways have electronic tolls, so ensure your rental car is equipped accordingly. Finding parking can be a bit of a challenge in busy city centers, but there are lots of paid parking garages and designated areas to choose from to avoid any fines. Best of all, driving in Portugal is generally safe and hassle-free.
Welcome to my guide that begins and ends in Lisbon! I’ve arranged the destinations in chronological order to keep things organized. I’ve also provided details on driving distance and duration, but please note that we rented our car for the duration of 5 days. We wanted to avoid driving in Lisbon at all costs. For this journey in Portugal, you’ll need at least 7 days, but don’t worry, if you visit in the summertime, the sun won’t set until 9 pm! And remember, it’s best to start your day early.

We landed in Lisbon just before midnight and braced ourselves for a quick snooze before a long day. After all, we wanted to make every minute of our 7 days in Portugal count! And don’t worry, day one is filled with some of Lisbon’s most iconic spots so make sure to wear some comfortable shoes because you will be doing a lot of walking.
Looking for a cozy crash pad in the heart of Lisbon? Look no further than the Solar Dos Poetas Hotel! While the rooms may be on the compact side, the views are big on charm. Trust us, you won’t find a better bang for your buck in this prime location. And don’t miss out on the breakfast buffet – it’s surprisingly so good!

Step into a real life fairytale at Palacio Chiado, the most stunning restaurant in Lisbon! Housed inside an 18th century palace, this restaurant in the Chiado neighborhood offers up a delightful menu of popular Portuguese dishes. Although reservations are recommended, we visited for lunch and were surprised to find it practically empty. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this. I could not stop taking pictures, it was all just SO magical!!!
INSIDER TIP: share if you can, because the portion sizes here were much bigger than we expected
In case you’re not already super full from lunch, pick up Portugal’s most popular dessert at Castro. Located in the heart of Lisbon, you can actually watch them being made by hand in a beautiful space. Legend has it this place is so good it surpasses Pastéis de Belém. Spoiler alert: we did try both and my husband would say Castro is better but I have a much harder time prioritizing one over the other.
Nothing could have prepared me for just how long the lines would be here. In my delusional mind, I assumed we could purchase tickets at the door and just waltz right in. Boy, was I oh so wrong. Do not repeat my mistake and purchase your tickets in advance. And if you do have some extra time in Lisbon, maybe get here right as they’re opening to avoid the massive crowds.

If you’re thinking to yourself, I just had some of these custard tarts? And now you want me to get more?? Let’s break this down, you’re in Portugal so there is no such thing as a limit on pasteis de nata AND it’s just a 3 minute walk from the Jerónimos Monastery. But if you really are “too full,” don’t worry because they can pack them up for you so you can save them for later!
I am going to be so real with you right now, we actually weren’t able to enter Belém Tower. We arrived just after 3 pm thinking that would give us more than enough time to explore before they closed at 5:30 pm. Well, they somehow sold out of tickets so this actually ended up being a pretty short stop for us.

Best way to get here is by ferry, take the ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas. From the ferry terminal, it’s about an 11 minute walk to the restaurant

I first caught a glimpse of this on Instagram, and my jaw dropped when I saw how stunning this café looked. I added this spot to our itinerary IMMEDIATELY, and you should too! Open since 1905, this café is full of vintage charm and Art Deco details that make it incredibly photogenic. And let’s not forget about the delicious desserts, like their famous pastel de nata. Stop by this iconic spot in the bustling Chiado district before leaving Lisbon.
A visit to Portugal isn’t complete without a glimpse of the coast, and Cabo da Roca offers some stunning coastline views!
Cabo da Roca, located on the westernmost point of mainland Europe, is a stunning cliffside destination in Portugal. It offers dramatic ocean views, rugged coastal scenery, and a windswept landscape that captures the wild beauty of the Atlantic coast. The site features a lighthouse and a monument marking its geographic significance, along with walking trails and viewpoints perfect for photography.
At this point you may be wondering if I base all my decisions off of what I see on social media, and the truth is I am definitely the type of person that is easily influenced by destinations I see on social media. The good news is, most of them have paid off…like Ursa Beach!
Ursa Beach is a secluded and stunning beach located next to Cabo da Roca. Known for its dramatic rock formations, golden sands, and crystal-clear waters, it offers a breathtaking natural landscape that feels untouched and wild. The beach is actually named after one of the prominent rock formations that resemble a bear (Ursa in Portuguese).
*The hike down to the beach is steep and challenging. Due to the car rental delay, we had some time constraints and were unable to do the entire hike. We did enjoy the scenic views on the trail along the cliffside though. Expect to carve out 1.5 hours to do the entire hike.
What’s that?? A cute little white-washed town cozied up along the cliffside?? This is such an easy pit stop on your way to Óbidos that rewards you with the best views!!! Perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it features charming whitewashed houses cascading down the hillside, creating a postcard-perfect scene. The village is renowned for its natural saltwater swimming pool, carved into the rocks, and its stunning views of the rugged coastline.
And this viewpoint? It’s right off the main road. Just google ‘Azenhas do Mar Viewpoint’ or save this address: R. Dr. António Brandão de Vasconcelos 40, 2705-098 Colares, Portugal
Why yes, this is the most adorable town in Portugal!!! I don’t mean to sound dramatic, but Óbidos was definitely the highlight of our 7 days in Portugal. Óbidos is a beautifully preserved medieval town. Enclosed within ancient castle walls, Óbidos is known for its narrow cobblestone streets, charming whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant flowers, and historical landmarks such as the impressive Óbidos Castle and the Igreja de Santa Maria.
You will want to make sure you carve out at least 3 hours to explore this charming little town! And rest assured, it’s small enough you can take your time strolling the streets and enjoying the lovely local shops.
This is the type of airbnb that should not be skipped! I love any excuse to explore airbnb’s ‘OMG’ category and I was overjoyed when I saw this airbnb is located just 20 minutes from Obídos! There are few airbnbs in the world that look something like this! And it’s considered a guest favorite, so you know it’s going to be good!! You are going to wish you could just spend all 7 days in Portugal here.
Pro tip: You are going to want to book this Airbnb sooner rather than later, because it does book up quickly! Totally worth the trek to get here for an unforgettable stay.
On day three of 7 days in Portugal, get ready to explore the delightful town of Aveiro and the charming coastal village of Costa Nova do Prado. Aveiro, also known as the “Venice of Portugal,” will amaze you with its colorful moliceiro boats and extravagant Art Nouveau architecture. Then, head to Costa Nova do Prado, where you’ll be blown away by the bold striped houses against the peaceful beaches.
Are you ready to be charmed? Aveiro, also known as the “Venice of Portugal,” will steal your heart! Take a leisurely boat ride along the canal and discover the colorful, historic buildings. Uncover Aveiro’s abundant history and culture at must-see sites like the Aveiro Cathedral and Aveiro Museum. This is SO much more than just your average beach town!!! This lovely coastal village near Aveiro is famous for its charming striped houses. These vibrant wooden cottages, painted in eye-catching red, blue, yellow, and green stripes, create a stunning backdrop against the sandy beaches, making Costa Nova truly unique.
In addition to its visual appeal, Costa Nova exudes a relaxing atmosphere and provides a tranquil getaway from the city. Stay on the Beach in Costa Nova do Prado: During our visit, we stayed at an amazing apartment Airbnb just steps from the beach!
The location was perfect for a relaxing seaside getaway, offering stunning views and easy access to the sand and surf. One of the highlights was dining at Bronze Seafood & Lounge Bar that served the most delicious food we had in Portugal – a true testament, especially coming from a very picky eater! The combination of the charming striped houses, the beautiful beach, and the incredible dining experience made our stay in Costa Nova do Prado unforgettable.
We’re heading to some truly special churches that you won’t find in your typical tourist guide. These hidden gems are perfect for a quick stop and boast vibrant facades and traditional Portuguese craftsmanship. After marveling at the architecture, make your way to the historic streets of Porto. This is bound to be a highlight of your 7 days in Portugal.
I have a feeling you are REALLY going to love this pit stop on your Portugal road trip! And it’s totally off the tourist beaten path. This church is unlike any church I have seen before. Want to know why?? The Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Válega in Portugal boasts of its jaw-dropping azulejos – those striking Portuguese ceramic tiles embellishing its facade. The tiles depict biblical scenes in vibrant hues, turning the church into the coolest masterpiece!!!
With its awe-inspiring tilework, the Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Válega sets itself apart from ordinary churches, and will make you swoon.
Introducing one of the most beautiful hidden gems in Portugal! I cannot be held accountable for the iPhone storage you are about to fill up. The Igreja de Santa Marinha de Cortegaça in Portugal is the perfect place to satisfy your tile obsession. The vibrant colors and intricate designs on its facade showcase Portugal’s artistic finesse. You’ll love the range of blue hues adorning the exterior.
The interior is just as beautiful with ornate altars and decorative elements. Sadly, this was another church we were unable to enter due to the time of day we were visiting but even just seeing the exterior of this church was worth it for the pit stop! The hours are not listed anywhere online, so you may get lucky and catch it open when you visit though.
Mother Nature was not on our side, and the rain was so aggressive during our visit that our time here was short lived but it is definitely one of the more unique churches we have visited and I guarantee it is well worth a visit! And let’s just say I would be spending a lot more time on church if this is what the setting looked like.
Nestled on a rocky outcrop along the stunning coastline of Miramar, this unique seaside chapel has managed to withstand brutal storms against the crashing Atlantic waves! So what’s the story behind this place??
The legend of Senhor da Pedra is one of Portugal’s great mysteries. Tales passed down through the ages tell of a miraculous image of Christ emerging from the sea right here. Another story speaks of a heavenly light shining over the rock, signaling it as the divine spot to build this chapel.
Before you visit, note that the chapel is most accessible during low tide and is best experienced at sunset.
As soon as we booked our flight to Lisbon, I just knew I had to find a way to make our way to Porto. After all, it is considered one of the most popular destinations in Portugal so I had to see what all they hype was about. And let me tell you, Porto delivered. This charming city in Portugal offers so much for visitors to enjoy, from its fascinating history and breathtaking architecture to its lively culture.
You can’t miss the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge and the atmospheric Ribeira district, or the chance to taste the famous Port wine in one of the many cellars. Take a cruise on the picturesque Douro River, and make sure to sample the delicious dishes like Francesinha. The arts scene is thriving, and you’ll feel right at home in this friendly, walkable city. With festivals, events, and nearby beaches, there’s always something new to discover in Porto.
Dating back to the 12th century, the Porto Cathedral is versatile in its style. It boasts a fusion of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, AND Manueline styles. You will really start to geek out once you step foot inside and see the stunning tilework. The Baroque altarpiece and ornate Chapel of the Holy Sacrament are also quite stunning.

Largo da Pena Ventosa is a charming and historic square located in the heart of Porto, Portugal, within the city’s UNESCO World Heritage zone. This picturesque area is known for its quaint atmosphere, historical significance, and traditional Portuguese architecture.
Whether you’re wandering through its cobbled streets, admiring the traditional buildings, or simply enjoying the local vibe, this is the perfect spot to take in some views.
This has got to be the most beautiful palace in Portugal!!! No trip to Porto is complete without a whirlwind tour of the Palacio da Bolsa, the historic stock exchange and home of the Porto Commercial Association. Don’t let the name fool you, this place is pure magic.
INSIDER TIP: You’ll need a guided tour to take it all in, and you’ll want to book a time slot in advance! We made the mistake of showing up day of and had to wait in a long queue in hopes of scoring a time slot for the day

Somehow the classic Portuguese tile look never gets old. This stunning structure is famous for its beautiful facade adorned with azulejos by artist Jorge Colaço. These tiles depict scenes from the life of Saint Ildefonso and other religious motifs, making the exterior visually captivating. Step inside and you’ll find elegant altars, gilded woodwork, and stained glass windows, creating a serene and inspiring atmosphere. The church was built between 1709 and 1739 and is conveniently located near Batalha Square, making it easily accessible and close to other attractions.

Say hello to Portugal’s most beautiful railway station!!! It’s easily one of the most Instagrammable spots in Porto, and it’s easy to see why! The station features 20,000 azulejos (blue and white ceramic tiles) by artist Jorge Colaço and depict key historical events and scenes of traditional Portuguese life. This is definitely a must visit during your 7 days in Portugal!
There is no shortage of beautiful churches in Portugal, and Porto really knows how to show off! I just knew I had to visit as many as I could. So here is another one you definitely don’t want to miss! The chapel is a central and easily accessible landmark, making it a popular spot for both tourists and locals. Its unique combination of artistic, historical, and architectural beauty makes the Chapel of Souls a must-visit destination in Porto!
We are Marriott junkies, and love any excuse to stay in one of their hotels when we are in a major city. The Renaissance Porto Lapa Hotel is a new 5-star hotel that is filled with all the amenities you could want, from comfortable, spacious rooms, to a rooftop bar, the most delicious complimentary treats at the front desk and the breakfast buffet is *chef’s kiss.* It’s the perfect hotel to catch some R&R after making your way halfway through 7 days in Portugal.
It is not centrally located, and given our time frame we found it easier to take an Uber in and out of the heart of the city.
You may have noticed I skipped a couple iconic spots in Porto yesterday, and that’s because I wanted to get an early start and minimize the crowds. The rest of the day is filled with charming little towns you won’t want to miss. Because 7 days in Portugal wouldn’t be complete without a few enchanting towns thrown into the mix!
Kicking things off early to ensure you have a moment of peace before the crowds ensue and you will thank me later. This place turns into chao quickly. But I am going to share some insider information that will save you from waiting in line for far too long with far too many people!
The best way to see Livaria Lello is to actually purchase the ticket voucher ‘gold’ option which gives you priority, skip-the-line entrance with reservation of a book (you can choose between ‘The Art of War’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’). The price of this ticket is €15.90. And if you would like to swap out the book, you have the option to do so once inside and pay the difference (given the cost of the book chosen). BOOK THESE TICKETS IN ADVANCE and I recommend lining up at 8:30 am before they open at 9 to get the best spot in line.
Making a long awaited comeback, another stunning church!! This 18th-century Baroque church is renowned for its stunning facade covered in traditional azulejos (blue and white tiles) depicting scenes from the Carmelite Order. Inside, it features some intricate carvings that reflect the rich heritage of the time. Unique in its proximity to the adjacent Igreja dos Carmelitas, separated by a narrow house, the church is centrally located near other attractions like Livraria Lello and the University of Porto.
I promise you the drive to Braga is worth it, because we were blown away by the popular church found here! Bom Jesus do Monte is is a remarkable sanctuary renowned for its architectural grandeur, religious significance, and picturesque setting.
Perched atop a hill overlooking the city, the sanctuary is best recognized by its iconic Baroque staircase, adorned with sculptures and fountains, leading up to the church. It’s STUNNING!!! The highlight of the sanctuary is the Basilica of Bom Jesus, a magnificent 18th-century church with intricate interior decoration and incredible views from its elevated position. Bom Jesus do Monte is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the northern region of Portugal.
I have to confess, I was on the fence with including this spot on our itinerary. After all, 7 days in Portugal goes by fast! But I am so glad we made a stop here. I can’t seem to understand why more tourists don’t flock to this charming medieval town. I was truly shocked at how much I fell in love with its charm, and wish we could have spent more time here strolling the cobblestone streets.
Guimarães is known as the “cradle of Portugal” because it’s where the first king was born! And the medieval center is just lovely – it’s even a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and amazing treasures like the Guimarães Castle and Palace of the Dukes of Braganza. It’s definitely worth checking out if you want to experience Portugal’s rich history!
There is something about Amarante’s old town center that makes it feel SO enchanting and unlike many other parts of Portugal!
Nestled cozily alongside the Tâmega River in northern Portugal lies charming Amarante. With historic buildings sporting colorful balconies lining quaint streets and the iconic São Gonçalo Bridge offering up stunning views, it’s easy to see why this town is a tourist’s dream. For those looking for an authentic taste of Portuguese charm, Amarante will certainly deliver! And rest assured, the town is small enough you can easily cover a lot of ground in just a couple hours. So it’s an easy addition to 7 days in Portugal
Let me tell you a story about a girl who stumbled upon the most charming Airbnb listing in the heart of Amarante. The catch? A two-night minimum. Luckily, fortune smiled upon her and the host agreed to a one-night stay. That girl was yours truly, and I’m still reeling from the breathtaking views I found there. So don’t miss out on this gem – book your stay now!
Sintra has become widely regarded as a must-see when in Portugal, especially when spending time in Lisbon. Sintra is easily accessible from Lisbon and many people make an entire day trip out of it. After spending some time in Sintra, I can confidently say you do not want to go 7 days in Lisbon without including Sintra on your itinerary. IT.ABSOLUTELY.LIVES.UP.TO.THE.HYPE!!!!
You are going to want to get an early start, so you can maximize your time in Sintra!
We had a wonderful time at this cozy boutique hotel! The location was just right. Águamel Sintra is a lovely family-owned Boutique Guest House housed in a stunning 1885 building that retains all the elegance of an ancestral family residence. Every room has its own character and distinctive decor. It was a convenient spot that offered comfortable accommodations. Plus, they even provide a complimentary breakfast!
Imagine a place that is so stunning it looks like a summer home Aladdin would own, because it gives off the most magical Arabian night vibes. Although the inspiration is actually rooted in Romanticism and Moorish Revival with neo-Gothic details. And while people are flocking to more popular Sintra hot spots, chances are you will deal with minimal crowds!
As you approach the palace, prepare to be enchanted by the gardens that surround it. The botanical gardens, winding paths, and picturesque lakes create the perfect setting for a leisurely stroll.
*This isn’t a walkable sight, so you will want to get here by bus, tuk tuk, or uber.
This spot is just proof you really can have it all, because wow the Quinta da Regaleira was cool!!! And as expected, crowds and crowds of people flock here to catch a glimpse of the infamous Initiation Well. But it’s not just the Initiation well that makes this Palace stand out. The Quinta da Regaleira is filled with a intricate towers, a beautiful chapel and gorgeous gardens!
To be honest, this palace was a little underwhelming but it’s right next door to Quinta da Regaleira and curiosity got the best of me so we popped in to check out. BUT, I would definitely consider this a hidden gem of Sintra. The Palace is beautiful, but quite small in comparison to other palaces found in the area. If you have the time and want to squeeze another spot into day 6 of your 7 days in Portugal Biester Palace isn’t a bad spot to explore.
Unpopular opinion, but the level of obsession I had with Casa Piriquita’s travesseiros surpassed any Pastel de natas I had during our 7 days in Portugal. And if you are wondering what travesseiros are, they are puff pastry delights made with egg yolks, almonds, and sugar, and are loved by both locals and tourists. In fact, they’re considered one of Sintra’s greatest delicacies! And Casa Piriquita makes the BEST ones, so expect a line but it is so worth it!!
Well, this is the end of your 7 days in Portugal but today is going to be SO good!! A trip to Sintra wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Pena Palace, and it’s a must before leaving this cute town. Then make your way to Lisbon to enjoy the last of this cool city. So let’s get to it!
Pena Palace has a reservation system in place to move people through the interior of the castle at a reasonable rate. You are going to want to book your tickets in advance to get the time slot you want and I recommend getting the time slot at 10:00 am. The gates open at 9 am to enter the palace grounds, and this will give you an answer to get some iconic photos of the exterior without all the crowds.

Visit the National Tile Museum in Lisbon for a unique and captivating look at Portuguese tiles. Housed in the 16th-century Convent of Madre de Deus, the museum boasts stunning tile murals and informative exhibits on tile-making techniques and cultural significance. The museum also includes a panoramic view of pre-1755 earthquake Lisbon.
Spilling the tea on a Lisbon hidden gem you need to check out! The Funicular ga Graça was just recently completed after 15 years of construction! It’s a single route from Rua dos Lagares to the Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen Viewpoint and boy are those views awesome. It’s also a great way to explore this part of Lisbon before your 7 days in Portugal comes to an end.
