This tiny Austrian village is one of the most photographed places in Europe and somehow still manages to feel magical in real life ❄️🏔️

When to visit Hallstatt:
Winter is cold but dreamy, with snow-dusted rooftops and fewer crowds than summer

How to get to Hallstatt:
The easiest route is from Salzburg or Vienna by train + ferry, or by car if you want flexibility. The ferry ride across Lake Hallstatt is a must. 🚆⛴️

Is Hallstatt worth it?
Yes but go early, stay overnight if you can, and explore beyond the main viewpoint. The real charm is wandering the village once the day-trippers leave ✨

We quickly realized back in 2017, on our first Christmas market trip, that it’s nearly impossible to get photos together without a tripod and we weren’t about to set one up in the middle of a busy Christmas market 🎄📸

Since then, professional photos have become our favorite kind of souvenir 🗺️

And it’s true what they say, Vienna’s Christmas markets really are some of the best in Europe 🇦🇹

Everything felt cozy, walkable, and easy to explore without the overwhelming crowds 🤫

There are multiple Christmas markets throughout Salzburg, each with its own vibe, and we had so much fun wandering between them 🗺️

We’ve been dreaming of visiting Hallstatt, Austria

We’ve been dreaming of visiting Hallstatt, Austria for years, and finally made it happen… and WOW, it lived up to every bit of the hype ☃️

This tiny lakeside village, tucked between the mountains and Hallstätter See, is just as magical in person as the photos make it seem 📸

One of the biggest surprises? It didn’t feel overly crowded this time of year, which made wandering the village, soaking in the views, and taking photos so much more enjoyable 🥰

We did learn that Hallstatt only hosts its Christmas market one day a year (and yes, we missed it 😅), but even without it, the cozy winter vibes were unmatched ❄️

If you’re planning a trip to Austria, Hallstatt is absolutely worth a visit — whether it’s winter, summer, or anywhere in between 🗓️

It’s charming, peaceful, and one of those places that truly feels special the moment you arrive 🥹

We’ve been visiting Europe’s Christmas markets every year since 2017, and one thing we will never get over?

And yes… we always pack foldable duffle bags on these trips because we already know what our carry-ons are going to look like on the flight home 😅✈️
