Late November – Late December (2024 Dates Pending)

When we added Switzerland to our Christmas market route in 2019, my imagination ran wild! I knew we couldn’t pass up a trip to visit Switzerland’s largest city. Zurich is such a cool place to visit with its perfect blend of history and charm.

There is just something about the holiday season that makes everything feel more magical and Zurich is no exception. Although most people overlook Zurich as a Christmas market destination, the city is filled with some amazing Christmas markets including a Christmas tree made out of Swarvoski crystals!

Stick around, so I can share some of the best things to see in Zurich during the holiday season.

Must See Christmas Markets in Zurich

There are seven distinct Christmas markets in Zurich and each one has their own unique theme. This ensures that everyone can enjoy them. We knew Switzerland was going to be beautiful, but they really show off during the holidays.

I have rounded up the best Christmas markets to visit in Zurich:

  • Zurich Central Station: This is one you will immediately cross off your list upon arriving in Zurich as this is the main station. You will find 150 stalls here making this one of the largest indoor Christmas market in Europe! Each stall is filled with beautiful locally made gifts and souvenirs. AND the famous 50 foot Christmas tree covered in 5,000 Swarvoski crystals.
  • Zurich Opera House: To be honest, the Christmas market found here was our favorite in Zurich! A charming little Christmas village filled with games and an ice-skating rink at the center of it. You’ll also find 100 Christmas stalls, a carousel and a fondue chalet. We also spotted a really cute Christmas tram for children where Santa embarks with them on a magical tour of Zurich. We spent most of our time here!
  • Zurich Old Town: I had to give this part of the city an honorable mention, because the Dörfli is found here and is considered the oldest Christmas market in Zurich. You will find several stalls that carry handmade goods from all over the world.
  • City Christmas Market: We we were blown away by what we saw here! A sweet little choir of children lined up in the shape of a Christmas tree singing Christmas songs. Their performance garnered a large audience with people singing along to popular Christmas songs. It was such a sweet way to feel the holiday spirit! They have different performances every night, but still organized in the shape of the tree. You will also find a few stalls here serving food and drinks.

Best Tips for Zurich Christmas Markets

  • The rumors are indeed true and Switzerland is expensive! Services are more expensive, because wages are much higher in Switzerland so you’ll want to budget accordingly. You don’t have to worry about tipping here though.
  • We were under the impression there would be snow on the ground this time of year, but it generally isn’t seen until January. Make sure to pack warm clothes though, because it does get cold. The average high in December is 44°F/5°C and an average low of 33°F/.5°C.
  • The opening and closing dates of each Christmas market here does vary, so check ahead of time to make sure you catch them before they close.
  • Here are some popular things to try at the Zurich Christmas markets: Fondue (duh!), sausages, 65h cider steak, Öpfelchüechli, Raclette, Flammkuchen, Gommer Cholera and Kaiserschmarrn.

10. Brussels Belgium Christmas Markets

The Brussels Christmas markets are actually considered one of the best Christmas markets in Europe as the entire city transforms into a winter wonderland! Over 2.5 million visitors pour into Brussels every year to catch a glimpse of their impressive festivities.

So you may be wondering why it ranks #10 on my list? I absolutely LOVED Brussels and would easily go back and visit these Christmas markets again but everywhere we went it felt so PACKED and just like any big city you have to keep an eye out for pick-pockets. We did visit on a weekend, so chances are you’ll have more luck beating the huge crowds during the week.

How to Navigate the Brussels Christmas Markets

With over 250 cute Christmas stalls, the Christmas markets in Brussels cover A LOT OF GROUND. I have provided some information to help you navigate the best Christmas markets in Brussels.

  • START HERE: The Grand Palace (Grote Market), Brussel’s town square. This is truly one of the most beautiful town squares in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site! You can catch a SPECTACULAR holiday light show here. No other light show I have witnessed even compares to this holiday light show and is a memorable MUST-SEE when visiting. The light show runs from Thursday through Sunday. It runs every hour from 5 pm with the last show at 10 pm.  Best part is it’s totally free! And the light show does change every year, so you never have to worry about repeats. You can also find a large, beautiful Christmas tree in the center of the square that is often used in the light show. An impressive nativity scene can also be found here.
  • NEXT STOP: Brussels Stock Exchange. La Bourse de Bruxelles is a former stock exchange building that lies directly behind a Christmas village during the holidays. The stalls found here are filled with local gifts and treats.
  • STOP THREE: Place Sainte-catherine. There is something about this spot that feels so charming and whimsical. The Christmas markets can be found near Sainte-Catherine Church and La Tour Noire. And you’ll spot some of the most unique carousels surrounded by fairytale lights that really add to the charm of this place. Every year this market features new countries, and it makes for a fun spot to experience new cultures and food. You can even catch a small light show here on the façade of the Sainte Catherine Church. The show takes place every 30 minutes from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
  • STOP FOUR: Marché aux Poissons. The biggest Christmas market in Brussels can be found here. Over 200 Christmas stalls can be found here. But the real star of the show is the Ferris wheel that gives you some of the best vantage views of the Christmas markets in the city.
  • STOP FIVE: De Brouckèreplein. Make your way over to this part of Brussels to enjoy some ice-skating and a mini Christmas village.
  • LAST STOP: Place de la Monnaie. You can actually find 3 artificial curling rinks surrounded by Christmas stalls here! The vibe is very après-ski village. And I can’t forget to mention the Dome. A 360° high-tech installation where you can catch some holiday shows. You can easily make your way back to the Grand Palace from here (just a 5 minute walk).

  • Christmas markets in Brussels are generally open from Nov. 25th to Jan. 1.
  • Avoid visiting on the weekends if you want to beat the crowds.
  • The currency used in Belgium is the euro, and I recommend you bring some cash to the Christmas markets. Many vendors will only accept cash.

Late November – January (2024 Dates Pending)

You will find a certain level of charm in Lucerne that makes this city feel like it’s a place out of a storybook. No matter what time of the year you visit though, Lucerne is easily considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

We loved the incredible view of the Switzerland alps and stunning lake that border this beautiful city. It felt like I was looking at something out of a postcard! The magic of the city is only amplified by the holidays and I am going to share all you need to know about the Christmas markets found here.

Looking to get a taste of Christmas in Prague? Let’s talk about the Christmas markets in Prague and everything you need to know.

  • OLD TOWN SQUARE CHRISTMAS MARKETS: Easily the best and most popular Christmas markets in Prague. You can expect heavy crowds here at all times of the day, but it’s worth a visit. Most of the stalls you find here primarily serve food and given that many tourists flock here you can expect to see inflated pricing here.
  • TYLOVO NÁMÊSTÍ CHRISTMAS MARKET: If you’re looking for a local spot to enjoy some festive food, this is the spot to go! Although small in size, cuisine from all over the world can be found in cute Christmas stalls. And the best part is you don’t have to worry about major crowding.
  • NÁMÊSTÍ MÍRU CHRISTMAS MARKET: Just in front of the Church of St Ludmila you will find a Christmas market that often flies under the tourist radar.  The Christmas stalls here sell more authentic, local goods, so I would save the shopping for this spot.!
  • FLORENC MANIFESTO CHRISTMAS MARKET: Calling all my foodies! Some of the best food can be found here, and the best part is you can find cute little igloos you can dine in surrounded by holiday decor.
  • NÁMÊSTÍ REPUBLIKY CHRISTMAS MARKET: If you need a breath of fresh air from the crowds, but still want a taste of Christmas markets that sell local gifts make sure to head to this market. You will find that this Christmas market feels more intimate and less commercial.

Prague Travel Tips

  • My husband may have been trying to dissuade me from having another overpriced trdelnik from the old town square, but my sweet tooth always wins out in the end! So here is a list of some of the best food to try in Prague: trdelniks of course, Russian pelmeni, Prague ham, grilled sausages, friend donuts and pancakes, lángos and potato pancakes!
  • Currency in Prague: Czech koruna. Although most places accept card payments, you’ll find that local shops and restaurants prefer cash so make sure to carry some Czech koruna with you.
  • It can get very cold in Prague, but chances are you’ll break a sweat climbing so many hills in the city so pack layers!
  • Average Temperature in Prague in December: The high is 40°F/4.4°C and the low is 32°F/0°C

5. Paris France Christmas Markets

Late November – January (2024 Dates Pending)

I am definitely no stranger to the magical allure of Paris and all of the iconic spots found in this beautiful city. I have been to Paris once in the spring and twice in December, and I have to admit I absolutely LOVE Paris during the holidays!

As the fashion capital of the world, Paris really knows how to make Christmas look extra chic. So let’s talk about why this is one of the best Christmas Markets in Europe. Keep reading to learn more!

Which Christmas Markets in Paris Should You Visit?

Paris is a BIG city, so you can expect to find anywhere from 15-20 Christmas markets across Paris. That is a lot of ground to cover, so let me share the best Christmas markets in Paris worth visiting:

  • JARDIN DES TUILERIES CHRISTMAS MARKET: Hands down our favorite Christmas market in Paris! Located just a few minutes from the Louvre you will find a Christmas market mixed with a Christmas carnival with a Ferris wheel, Santa’s fun house, an ice-skating rink and so much more. It’s easy to see why this Christmas market gets over 13 million visitors every year.
  • HÔTEL DE VILLE CHRISTMAS MARKET & VILLAGE: A dreamy little spot found in the front of Paris’s main town hall. The Christmas market displays a large assortment of Christmas trees, some beautiful carousels, cozy little wooden christmas stalls and a really cool light display on the façade of Hôtel de Ville.
  • NOTRE DAME DE PARIS CHRISTMAS MARKET: One of the most iconic spots in Paris dressed in holiday flair and overlooking the Notre Dame (currently in renovation). It can be found across the Seine river in Square Viviani and you will find local artists selling handcrafted gifts.

  • EIFFEL TOWER CHRISTMAS MARKET: Does it get any better than celebrating the holidays under the Eiffel Tower?? Christmas Stalls covered in twinkling lights line the 7th arrondissement just below the Eiffel Tower.
  • MONTMARTRE CHRISTMAS MARKET: That’s right, one of the most photogenic spots in Paris is home to a Christmas market! Keep in mind this is a small Christmas market with anywhere from 15-20 stalls, but most of these stalls include local artists that sell some unique gifts. You can also find more traditional food here like escargot. This spot can be found next to the Place des Abbesses Metro station.

What to know before visiting Paris Christmas Markets

  • Let’s get the most important thing out of the way, you do not want to miss the iconic Christmas tree at Galeries Lafayette. Chances are it’s already on your list, but had to give this spot an honorable mention.
  • Another festive thing to do in Paris during the holidays is to check out all the beautiful Christmas window  displays of the Grand Magasins.
  • CURRENCY: Euro. Although most Christmas markets accept card, it’s always good to have cash on hand.
  • Best Food at Christmas Markets: Raclette, roasted chestnuts, crêpes, tartiflette, churros, aligot, tarte flambée, bretzels, pain d’épices and more!
  • Average Weather in Paris in December: High of 47°F/8.3°C with a low of 39°C/3.8°C

4. Rothenburg ob der Tauber Germany Christmas Markets

December 1st – December 23rd, 2024

The first time I laid eyes on Rothernburg, my heart nearly burst at the sheer sight of this darling town! If you’re a sucker for a good fairytale, you will absolutely fall in love with this town.

Rothenburg is considered the most beautifully preserved medieval town in Germany, and if you’re wondering what makes this place such a popular destination during the holidays check out my Rothenburg Christmas travel guide below

Rothenburg ob der Tauber Christmas Market Mini Guide

Did you know that Rothenburg ob der Tauber is considered Germany’s Christmas capital? Although small in size, you will find that Rothenburg provides plenty to see and do, especially during the holidays!

Here are some things you need to add to your Rothenburg travel itinerary this time of year:

  • The Rothenburg Christmas markets open in late November and close just a couple days before Christmas. AND Christmas markets don’t stay open past 8 pm on the weekends and 7 pm on weekdays. You’ll find that most Christmas markets in Europe stay open until early January, but Germany is different. We poorly timed our trip to Rothenburg on Christmas Day and we were limited with what we could see.
  • Rothenburg is home to the most ICONIC Christmas store in Europe, Käthe Wohlfahrt. You can actually find a Christmas museum just above the shop and I am here to tell you the museum definitely lives up to the hype! The entrance fee is €4 per adult and €2 per child. Keep in mind they are closed on Sundays. Check out their website here.
  • It’s impossible to miss the Christmas Village here. The town center is filled with the most beautiful Christmas stalls that surround this large Christmas tree. You’ll also find live music and delicious local food here.
  • To be honest, Rothenburg is the type of place best explored by wandering the streets without an itinerary but if you’re looking for some other spots to check out while you’re here you can add the Medieval Crime Museum (this was one of the few spots opened when we visited, and we actually found this museum to be very fascinating), Church of St. James and Castle Garden to your itinerary.

Before You Go To Rothenburg ob der Tauber

  • How much time should you set aside to explore? Most people visit Rothenburg on a day-trip, but what makes this town extra magical during the holidays is seeing it light up as night falls. I highly recommend spending one night here.
  • How to get to Rothenburg? You can book through a tour company like this one and have all the transportation taken care of. You can arrive here by train like we did. The train stop is ‘Rothenburg ob der Tauber’ and it drops you off just a short distance from old town Rothenburg. You can book a longer, more scenic route to Rothenburg here. Or you can get here by car.
  • Make sure you are traveling to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, so you don’t get routed to the wrong place. Germany has several Rothenburgs.
  • Best food to try here: Cambozola, Bierschinken Wurst, and Nürnberger Bratwürste
  • Average Weather in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in December: Expect some cold, windy weather here. The high this time of year is 38°F/3.3°C and the low is 29°F/-1.6°C

2. Bruges Belgium Christmas Markets

Late November – January (2024 Dates Pending)

Bruges is perhaps one of the most charming cities in Europe! A place so magical you never want to leave. We scheduled a brief 24 hours here to see the Christmas markets, but fell head over heels for Bruges and it was SO hard to leave. We are just dying to go back!

Bruges oozes charm all year round, but the holiday season makes this place feel EXTRA magical. Do yourself a favor and pay Bruges a visit, you will not regret it. Don’t believe me? Let me show you!

A Taste of Christmas in Bruges

Christmas Markets in Bruges may be on the smaller end, but this town has SO much to offer! The city does look like something straight out of a fairytale after all. And nothing beats the sweet scent of waffles that fill the air.

I’m going to give you the low down on Bruges Christmas markets, hidden gems, best food to try and more:

  • MARKT CHRISTMAS MARKET: Let’s just say it’s hard to move on from a place like this! The historic town center looks like something out of a painting with cobblestone streets, a beautiful grand palace, a medieval bell tower and the cutest row buildings that mirror that of Amsterdam. You will find the most iconic Christmas market here filled with local goods and food.
  • SIMON STEVINPLEIN: This Christmas market can be found just a few minutes from the Markt Christmas market. Trees covered in lights line the streets and you can find another round of cute Christmas stalls. You can also find a variety of carnival games!

Some Insider Info on Christmas in Bruges

  • Best Belgian Food Found at the Christmas Markets: Waffles, waffles and more waffles! But seriously, I have yet to find any waffle that tops the waffles found in Bruges. Another treat you don’t want to miss is the chocolate. Unpopular opinion, but I found the chocolate here to be a lot better than the chocolate we had in Switzerland! Other food you want to try includes fries, speculoos and Bûche de Noël.
  • Bruges is famous for its beautiful lace designs, and you don’t want to leave without picking up a lace souvenir. Our lace christmas ornament from Bruges is one of my absolute favorite things to see on our Christmas tree every year!

  • Average Weather in December: The average high is 46°F/8°C and the average low is 39°F/4°C
