Where is Mackinac Island Located?

Mackinac Island is a small, car-free island in Lake Huron, located between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. You’ll find it just off the coast of northern Michigan, nestled between the cities of St. Ignace and Mackinaw City. If you’re planning a Michigan getaway, this is one spot you don’t want to miss.

Before diving into all the best things to do on Mackinac Island, it’s helpful to understand where it is and how to get there. Whether you’re coming from Detroit, Grand Rapids, or even out of state, Mackinac Island is a must-visit Michigan destination that’s totally worth the travel time.

How Do You Get to Mackinac Island?

So you want to know how to get to Mackinac Island? The closest major airport is Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) in Traverse City, Michigan, which is about a 2-hour drive from the Mackinac Island ferry in Mackinaw City. Once you land, you’ll want to rent a car and drive north through scenic northern Michigan.

While Traverse City (TVC) has the most flight options and is the best choice for most travelers, there is a closer airport—Pellston Regional Airport (PLN)—just 20 minutes from the ferry docks. It’s a small airport with limited flights, but a great option if it works with your schedule!

Everything You Need to Know about the Ferry

So how long does the ferry take to Mackinac Island? To reach the island itself, you’ll take a ferry, which typically takes about 15–20 minutes. Two main ferry companies operate from both Mackinaw City and St. Ignace: Shepler’s Ferry and Arnold Transit Company. Both offer regular departures every 30 minutes or so during peak season (late April through the end of October).

Worried about your bags? Don’t be! Your luggage travels with you on the ferry, and many hotels have dock porters who will greet you and whisk your bags away to your room.

Bringing a bike or a leashed pet? Go for it! Both are welcome on board. And once you arrive, you can hop into a horse-drawn carriage taxi (yes, really!) or simply stroll to your accommodations, no cars allowed here, which is part of what makes Mackinac Island so special.

Best Time to Visit Mackinac Island

If you’re wondering when to plan your trip, the best time to visit Mackinac Island is between late spring and early fall— especially May through October, when most of the island’s attractions, shops, and restaurants are open for the season.

This is when you’ll find all the best things to do on Mackinac Island in full swing, from horse-drawn carriage rides to lakeside bike rides and famous fudge shops.

For fewer crowds, consider visiting in May or late September just outside the peak summer rush. You’ll still enjoy beautiful weather and plenty of activities without the mid-summer tourists. Bonus: hotel rates are often lower during these shoulder seasons, making it a more affordable and peaceful time to explore.

How much time do I need on Mackinac Island?

Because the island is small (just under 4 square miles!), you can easily experience many of the best things to do on Mackinac Island in a short amount of time. Whether you’re biking the scenic loop, indulging in the island’s famous fudge, or exploring historic Fort Mackinac, a well-planned Mackinac Island itinerary can cover a lot in just one day.

Personally, I think one night on Mackinac Island is the sweet spot, it gives you time to soak up the charm, enjoy dinner with a view, and catch the sunrise before hopping on the ferry back. If you’re short on time, a day trip works too, but staying overnight adds a little extra magic to your visit.

Where to Stay Overnight?

When planning your Mackinac Island itinerary, one of the biggest decisions is where to stay. The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is hands-down the most iconic property and for good reason. It’s absolutely stunning, from the world’s longest front porch to the beautifully manicured gardens. But keep in mind: summer stays come with a 3-night minimum and a hefty price tag.

Personally, I don’t think you need to splurge on a stay there to enjoy it. You can still experience the charm with a visit for afternoon tea, dinner and dancing, or by grabbing a sweet treat at Sadie’s ice cream shop.

We opted for a boutique hotel right in the heart of Main Street Mackinac Island, and it was perfect. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the car-free street — waking up to horse-drawn carriages clip-clopping by was pure magic!

Since there are no cars allowed on the island, horse-drawn transportation is both nostalgic and practical, giving visitors a slower, more scenic way to explore this unique destination.

There are three main types of carriage rides on Mackinac Island, each offering something a little different:

1. Mackinac Island Carriage Tours:
This is the most popular option for first-time visitors! These group tours are a fantastic way to see the island’s highlights. Tours last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and depart on a first-come, first-served basis — no set times, just hop on the next available carriage once you’ve purchased your ticket at the office.

2. Drive-Your-Own Carriage with Jack’s Livery Stable:
Ready for something a little more hands-on? Jack’s Livery Stable offers a unique experience where you can rent a private carriage and drive yourself around the island. After a short lesson, you’re off to explore at your own pace. No previous experience needed — the horses are calm, well-trained, and know their way around.

3. Horse-Drawn Taxi Cabs:
Need a lift to your hotel or a ride to dinner? The island’s horse-drawn taxis operate 24/7 during the summer season. These can’t be hailed like a typical cab — instead, call the taxi dispatch office and one will be sent your way. It’s a fun (and functional) way to get around.

Taxi cabs only TAKE CASH and rates vary by location and size of group. See full rates here.
