Canines in Carmel: The Best Dog Friendly Town

This charming sea side town has been rated the #1 Dog Friendly Town in America, which makes this the perfect spot for your next dog-friendly vacation!

Below you will find a list of some of the best dog friendly things to do in Carmel.

Make sure to download my dog-friendly Carmel guide at the end of this blog post. It’s filled with even MORE things to see and do that are not included in this post.

Carmel Beach

Most coastal towns I have visited in California often require me to go out of my way to locate a dog-friendly beach, but you won’t find that here!

The beach that borders Carmel-by-the-sea is dog-friendly, which means you can enjoy your beach time while your dog plays off-leash.

Make sure to explore Scenic Road while you are here!

This road is found alongside the beach and provides spectacular views of Carmel Point. Don’t forget to keep your dog on the leash when exploring Scenic Road.

Carmel Plaza

A darling outdoor mall that welcomes dogs into many of their shops, art galleries and restaurants.

While you’re here make sure to check out the popular Fountain of Woof found in the courtyard of the plaza. Rumor has it if your dog drinks from the fountain it’s good luck.

Mad Dogs & Englishmen

All dog owners are about to rejoice, because this bike rental shop is a dream come true!

My dog is 80 pounds, so taking him on a bike ride is out of the question that is until I came upon this bike shop.

Luckily, these are electric bikes so you don’t have to worry about trying to ride a traditional bike with the added weight.

It’s a little pricy to rent this bike with the sidecar (see here), but it was one of the BEST dog friendly things to do in Carmel. Make sure to check them out Tuesday-Sunday (closed on Mondays).

Check out how amazing this bike ride really was here!!

Ocean Avenue

This area makes me feel some type of way, because these colorful cottages are straight out of a storybook! Plenty of spots to snag some cute photos of your pup.

This particular area is located on Ocean Avenue between Monte Verde and Lincoln St.

Many of these shop owners will have water out for your dog, and if you’re lucky maybe even a treat or two.

While you’re in the area drop by Diggidy Dog to snag some some toys for your pup.

You and your dog will enjoy spending time in this cozy part of Carmel!

Carmel Shell Mural

Before you and your dog leave Carmel-by-the-sea, stop by the iconic Carmel Shell Mural to snap one last photo.

This mural made its debut in 2020 and was painted by local artist Marie-Clare Treseder Gorham. It’s located on the corner of Mission Street and Sixth Avenue.

I hope this guide helps you find all the dog friendly things to do in Carmel. To see more pet-friendly travel ideas check out my dog-friendly posts here
