One of the most magical parts of visiting Iceland in June

The lupins are in full bloom!!! This video captures some of our favorite spots along our 9-day Iceland in June itinerary. Even if you’re not a flower enthusiast, these vibrant fields make Iceland in June irresistible!

Why Visit Iceland in June?

If you’re wondering is June a good time to visit Iceland, the short answer is yes! Iceland in June offers the perfect mix long daylight hours and fewer crowds compared to the peak of summer.

Here are some of the reasons June is such an incredible month to explore Iceland:

MIDNIGHT SUN

In June, Iceland experiences nearly 24 hours of daylight, giving you plenty of time to chase waterfalls, hike to hidden viewpoints, and capture those unforgettable photos.

June is prime time to see puffins nesting along cliffs and other wildlife active across the islands.

While Iceland’s weather is always a little unpredictable, June tends to be one of the warmer, more stable months, with mild temperatures ideal for exploring.

June offers better pricing on accommodations and tours than the peak of July and August, letting you enjoy Iceland’s magic without breaking the bank.

Iceland Weather in June: What to Expect

If you’re planning a trip, you’re probably wondering about Iceland weather in June and what kind of temperatures to expect.

The good news is that Iceland in June is one of the best months for exploring comfortably while still enjoying long daylight hours and mostly accessible roads. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:

TEMPERATURES

Average daytime temperatures in June range from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F), though it can feel warmer in the sun. Nights are cool, so a light jacket or layers are essential.

Iceland is famously breezy. Even in June, gusts can be strong along the coast, especially near waterfalls and cliffs, so pack windproof layers.

While June is relatively dry compared to the rest of the year, Iceland weather is unpredictable, and showers can pop up at any time. A good waterproof jacket and quick-dry clothes are lifesavers.

One of the biggest perks of visiting in June is the midnight sun. You can enjoy up to 21–24 hours of daylight, giving you extra time to explore waterfalls, mountains, and hidden gems without feeling rushed.

Driving in Iceland in June: What to Know

One of the best ways to explore Iceland in June is by renting a car. It gives you the freedom to chase waterfalls, stop at hidden gems, and explore the South Coast and Eastfjords at your own pace.

June is one of the easiest months for driving in Iceland — most main roads are open, the weather is mild, and the extended daylight gives you plenty of time to sightsee.

When renting a car in Iceland in June, consider a compact or mid-size car for paved roads, or a 4WD if you plan to tackle gravel or Highland routes. Gravel damage insurance is a must, and it’s smart to book early since rentals fill up fast.

While roads are generally in good condition, sudden rain and wind are common, so always check Iceland road conditions in June before heading out.

Overall, driving in Iceland in June is smooth, safe, and one of the best ways to see the country at your own pace.

DAY 9: Blue Lagoon

Day One: Arrive in Reykjavik + South Coast

Our Iceland in June itinerary officially began in Reykjavik, where we landed early and jumped straight into exploring the city before starting our road trip.

Since we couldn’t snag a reservation at the Blue Lagoon for our arrival day (definitely book this in advance if it’s on your list), we decided to spend the morning sightseeing and eating our way through the capital instead.

Our first stop was the iconic Hallgrímskirkja Church, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Iceland and a great place to get your bearings after a long flight.

From there, we walked over to Skólavörðustígur Rainbow Street, which was especially colorful and lively in early summer. We grabbed pastries at Bernhöftsbakarí, followed by a classic Icelandic hot dog from Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur (touristy, but worth it).

By early afternoon, we picked up our rental car and officially started our road trip portion of our Iceland in June itinerary. We had hoped to squeeze in a stop at Hrunalaug Hot Spring, but between jet lag and city exploring, we ran out of time.

Keldur Turf House

We continued on toward the South Coast, making a quick stop at the historic Keldur Turf House, one of the oldest preserved turf farms in Iceland.

The historic Keldur Turf House is one of the oldest and best-preserved examples of traditional Icelandic turf architecture, and it’s a fascinating stop on a South Coast road trip or an Iceland in June itinerary.

In summer (typically June 1 – August 31), the turf farm is open to the public daily, usually from about 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also walk around the exterior anytime, and even outside of the official opening season you can view the turf houses from the outside and take photos.

Panorama Glass Lodge

One of the standout experiences on our Iceland in June road trip was our night at Panorama Glass Lodge, and honestly, it’s one of the most unforgettable places we stayed in Iceland.

This unique lodge gives you floor-to-ceiling views of Icelandic wilderness right from your bed! You even get a private outdoor hot tub, one of our favorite spots to relax with a view after dinner.

Unlike a standard hotel room, here you’re surrounded by nature with almost no light pollution. Staying at Panorama Glass Lodge feels like a destination in itself — a peaceful retreat that elevates your Iceland trip beyond sightseeing!

Day Two: South Coast Waterfalls + Vík

Day two of our Iceland in June itinerary was all about exploring the South Coast, hiking to hidden gems, and ending the day in one of Iceland’s most charming towns.

Seljalandsfoss + Gljúfrabúi Waterfalls

Our first stop was Seljalandsfoss, one of the most famous waterfalls to visit when traveling to Iceland in June. The walking path behind the waterfall is usually fully accessible this time of year, which makes it even more special.

Just a few minutes away is Gljúfrabúi, a hidden waterfall tucked inside a narrow canyon. You’ll likely get your shoes wet walking in, but it’s such a fun and unique experience and much less crowded than Seljalandsfoss.

Seljavallalaug Swimming Pool

Next, we headed to Seljavallalaug, one of the oldest swimming pools in Iceland and honestly one of the coolest stops of the day. It’s about a short, easy hike from the parking area, and the setting is unreal with mountains towering all around you.

A quick tip: the facilities are very rustic and in rough shape, so I recommend changing before you arrive and bringing your own towel.

Skógafoss + Kvernufoss (plus lunch stop!)

After that, we visited Skógafoss, another iconic South Coast waterfall that’s massive and powerful in person. There’s a staircase you can climb for views from above, but even seeing it from the base is impressive.

There’s also a café at Skógafoss, which was super convenient for lunch. We grabbed food here and it was so good, a great spot to refuel before continuing the drive.

Right next door is Kvernufoss, which ended up being one of our favorites. It’s quieter, tucked into a small gorge, and you can also walk behind this one — perfect if you want something a little more peaceful.

Vík + Church Viewpoint (Lupins in June!)

We ended the day in Vík, a small coastal town that’s a must-stop when visiting Iceland in June. Don’t skip the Vík í Myrdal Church, which sits on a hill overlooking the town and black sand beaches.

During June, the field just above the church fills with blooming lupins, and it’s one of the best viewpoints in the area — especially with the soft light from the midnight sun.

Day Three: Epic Hikes & Glacier Views

If day two was about waterfalls, day three of our Iceland in June itinerary was all about hiking and not the casual kind. This was easily our most active day, but also one of the most jaw-dropping days of the entire trip.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

Our first stop was Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, and wow… this place truly lives up to the hype you see all over social media.

The trail is well marked with a gradual incline, and there are multiple viewpoints along the way, including a platform that gives you the best panoramic view over the canyon. Visiting Iceland in June made this hike especially enjoyable.

One important note: please respect the barriers. Sadly, we saw several people climbing over them just to get a photo. The vegetation here is extremely fragile, and Iceland works hard to preserve these landscapes. The views are just as incredible from the designated paths.

Svartifoss

Next, we headed to Svartifoss, a striking waterfall surrounded by dramatic black basalt columns.

The hike is moderate and about 2 miles round trip, but well worth the effort. The contrast of the dark lava rock against the flowing water is stunning and totally different from the other waterfalls you’ll see in Iceland in June.

Hofskirkja (Hidden Gem Stop)

After that, we made a quick stop at Hofskirkja, and it ended up being one of our favorite little surprises of the day.

This tiny, moss-covered church feels straight out of a fairytale and is such a peaceful place to stretch your legs and take photos. It’s often overlooked, but if you’re road tripping through Iceland, it’s absolutely worth pulling over for.

Múlagljúfur Canyon

Then came the hike that completely stole the show: Múlagljúfur Canyon.

Hands down one of the most epic hikes we did in Iceland in June. The trail is challenging in parts, with elevation gain and uneven terrain, but the views at the top are unreal — waterfalls cascading into the canyon, glaciers in the distance, and endless green valleys below.

Our jaws were on the floor the entire time.

Fagurhólsmýri Glacier

Since it was right down the road, we stopped by Fagurhólsmýri Glacier to take in the icy landscape up close. It was a quick stop, but such a cool contrast after a day filled with green canyons and mossy cliffs.

Dinner in Höfn

By this point, we were beyond hungry, so learn from us and pack snacks if you’re doing this route. Food options are limited along the way.

We finished the day in Höfn, where we grabbed dinner and settled in for the night, completely exhausted but riding the high of one of the most unforgettable days of our Iceland in June road trip.

Day Four: Glaciers and Puffins

Day four of our Iceland in June itinerary was one of the longest (and most rewarding) days of the trip. From glacier lagoons to puffin cliffs and colorful villages, this day truly felt like we experienced five different countries in one.

Heinabergslón Glacier Lagoon Kayaking Tour

We started the morning with a kayaking tour at Heinabergslón Glacier Lagoon, which we chose because it’s much more secluded and peaceful than some of the more famous lagoons.

Being out on the water surrounded by icebergs was beautiful, and visiting Iceland in June meant calm conditions and manageable temperatures for kayaking.

That said, I’ll be totally honest — we were a bit disappointed because the tour photos online made it seem like we’d be getting much closer to the glaciers and possibly even walking on them, which wasn’t the case.

Stokksnes Peninsula

Next, we headed to the iconic Stokksnes Peninsula, home to Mount Vestrahorn — one of the most photographed landscapes in Iceland.

Stokksnes is easy to find. You’ll see signage for the location. The road leads to a small café where you’ll pay a small entrance fee. You can either park there or continue driving deeper into the area.

For photography, the best time to visit is low tide, when the wet black sand creates a mirror-like reflection of the mountains and clouds. The soft light you get in Iceland in June, especially early morning or late evening, makes this spot even more magical.

Drive to Borgarfjörður Eystri (Puffins!)

Then came one of the longest drives of the day — but also one of the most unforgettable.

From Stokksnes, it takes about 3 to 3.5 hours to reach Borgarfjörður Eystri, depending on road conditions and stops. It’s a winding, scenic drive through remote parts of East Iceland… and I can confidently say it is 1000% worth it.

This was hands down the best place we saw puffins during our entire Iceland in June trip.

There were so many puffins. And not just far away — we were incredibly close to them. Watching them waddle around, take off, and dive into the ocean was unreal.

I genuinely cannot put into words how special this place was. If you’re visiting Iceland in June, this stop is absolutely non-negotiable.

Seyðisfjarðarkirkja & the Rainbow Road

We ended the day in Seyðisfjörður, one of the prettiest towns we visited in Iceland.

Here you’ll find Seyðisfjarðarkirkja, the famous blue church at the end of the colorful rainbow road. The town itself is surrounded by dramatic mountains and waterfalls, and it feels straight out of a postcard.

After such a long day of driving and hiking, this was the perfect peaceful place to slow down, explore, and soak in the views before calling it a night.

Day 5: Black Sand Beaches & Glamping

Day five of our Iceland in June itinerary was a long one. We needed to make our way from Egilsstaðir to Hella, where we were staying for the night before flying to the Faroe Islands from Reykjavík the next day.

The drive takes about 7–8 hours without stops, but in true Iceland fashion… we stopped. A lot.

The landscapes along this route are unreal — wide open valleys, dramatic mountains, endless stretches of road and we even spotted reindeer along the way!!!

Diamond Beach (Jökulsárlón)

Our first planned stop was Diamond Beach, one of the most famous spots to visit in Iceland in June.

And yes — expect crowds. Lots of them.

While we didn’t see nearly as much ice washed up on the shore as you often see online, the setting itself is stunning. We also spotted seals swimming in the water while kayaking tours passed through the glacier lagoon nearby, which was such a fun surprise.

If you’re visiting Iceland in June, this is one of those places that’s worth seeing at least once — even if just briefly.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

Next, we made our way to Reynisfjara Beach, another iconic stop that you’ve probably seen all over social media.

This black sand beach is famous for its dramatic basalt columns and the towering sea stacks just offshore. And it’s so cool to see in person!!

The waves here are no joke. The “sneaker waves” are extremely strong and unpredictable, so make sure to keep your distance from the water and never turn your back on the ocean.

Overnight at ÖÖD Hekla Horizon

We ended the day at ÖÖD Hekla Horizon, and I can confidently say this was our favorite stay of the entire trip.

Hands down. No contest.

We stayed in one of their private units with our own hot tub and sauna, and it was absolute perfection after such a long day of driving. Sitting in warm water, looking out at the wide-open Icelandic landscape in the soft summer light of Iceland in June… unreal.

If you’re planning a road trip through Iceland and want one truly special place to stay, this is it. They also offer communal hot tubs and saunas if you don’t book a private unit — but either way, I cannot recommend this place enough.

Day Six: Off to the Faroe Islands

Day six marked a short pause in our Iceland in June itinerary — not the end, just a quick adventure abroad before returning to Iceland a couple of days later.

Before heading to Reykjavík Airport, we made one last unexpected (and very cool) stop.

Hveragerði Sunnumörk Shopping Center

We pulled over at the Hveragerði Sunnumörk Shopping Center, and this might be one of the most underrated stops in all of Iceland.

At first glance, it looks like a normal place to grab snacks and use the bathroom — but it’s actually built directly on top of the Mid-Atlantic Rift, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.

You can literally walk between two continents in under 10 seconds.

Flying to the Faroe Islands

After stocking up on snacks, we continued on to Reykjavík Airport to fly to the Faroe Islands for a quick 48-hour side trip — before returning to Iceland to finish our journey.

If you’re planning Iceland in June and want to add something extra, the Faroe Islands are an incredible extension to consider.

Day Seven: Faroe Islands

After landing in the Faroe Islands, we spent the next 48 hours exploring dramatic cliffs, remote villages, waterfalls that spill straight into the ocean, and some of the most rugged landscapes we’ve ever seen!!!

Day Eight: Faroe Islands & Sky Lagoon

After two packed days in the Faroe Islands, we flew back to Iceland in the afternoon to continue our Iceland in June itinerary and honestly, we couldn’t have planned a better way to ease back into things.

Sky Lagoon

Upon landing in Reykjavik, we headed straight to Sky Lagoon, and it was exactly what we needed.

After nonstop hiking, driving, and exploring, soaking in the warm geothermal water while overlooking the ocean felt unreal. The Sky Lagoon lives up to the hype and ended up being one of our favorite experiences in Iceland in June.

One important tip: make a reservation in advance, especially if you’re visiting Iceland in June when travel is at its peak. Time slots do sell out.

They don’t have an online store, so if you fall in love with something (like I did with their pillow spray), buy it on the spot. I’m still thinking about that scent.

Day Nine: Blue Lagoon & Departure

Our final day of our Iceland in June itinerary started early… but in the best way possible! We stayed near the airport at the Courtyard by Marriott Reykjavík Keflavík Airport, which ended up being incredibly convenient — the Blue Lagoon is only about 20 minutes away.

Blue Lagoon

We booked the first time slot of the day (7:00 AM) and cannot recommend this enough. If you’re visiting Iceland in June, this is the best way to experience the lagoon with fewer crowds and a more peaceful atmosphere.

We chose the Comfort Ticket, and honestly, it’s more than sufficient. You still get entrance to the lagoon, a silica mud mask, and a free drink ticket (including smoothies!). We both went with the green smoothie, and it was surprisingly delicious.

After doing the silica mask, I recommend making your way to the back of the lagoon — it’s much quieter there and perfect for relaxing away from the main crowds. You’ll also find both wet and dry saunas scattered throughout the lagoon, which are such a nice touch.

It felt surreal floating in warm, milky-blue water as the final chapter of our Iceland in June adventure.

Back to the Airport

After soaking, we headed back to our hotel to rinse off, pack up, and make our way to the airport.

Not being able to visit the Blue Lagoon at the start of our trip felt disappointing at the time… but in hindsight, it was the perfect ending to close out an unforgettable trip to Iceland in June!
