Quick Tips for Planning Your Edinburgh Itinerary

Well look who’s planning a trip to the enchanting gothic city of Edinburgh! Get ready to be enchanted by the charm that draws visitors back year after year.

With so much information available, planning might make you feel like you’re in a maze. You’re in lucky, because I have created a step-by-step guide that will make the planning process as stress-free as possible.

So Where is Edinburgh Located Exactly?

Calling all royal wannabes! Edinburgh, the historic city that oozes culture and jaw-dropping architecture, is waiting for you. And let’s face it, who doesn’t want to feel like a king or queen for a day? Fun fact: Edinburgh is located in southeastern Scotland, so if you’re jet-setting in, the airport is a measly 8 miles from the city center.

But wait, there’s more! While Edinburgh Airport may not have its own train station, fear not – strong transport links will have you feeling like a local in no time. Pro tip: with connections to the rest of Scotland, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, AND London, you might as well make Edinburgh your starting point for your epic British adventure.

Looking for the Best Time to Visit Edinburgh?

“Who says Scotland only has 2 seasons? If you’re in the mood for warmer weather and longer days, grab your sunscreen and visit in the summer months! You might get lucky and even see the sun (emphasis on the “might”). But beware, the crowds and high prices might make you wish for a rainy day to just stay indoors.

But if you want to avoid the crowds, the colder months are calling your name! Get ready to cozy up in the most medieval charming city without feeling like a sardine in a tin can. Plus, your wallet will thank you for the awesome discount on accommodations.

The Best Edinburgh Scotland Hotels Worth Staying

Scotland’s wee capital has got a whole lotta charm packed into its pint-sized streets. So why settle for mediocre digs when you can lodge in one of the most enchanting stays in all of Edinburgh? Trust me, these accommodations are the crème de la crème. From historic pubs to cozy cottages, there’s no better way to soak up all that Edinburgh has to offer.

Stay in the Coolest Castle Hotel Near Edinburgh

Who needs a fairy godmother when you have Dalhousie Castle? Not only can you tour this sensational castle, but you can also spend the night! It’s got more amenities than a royal palace- with its spa, falconry, and a restaurant that’s literally in the dungeon (how cool is that?!). Oh, and let’s not forget about the spooky ghost stories that’ll make you scream for joy. Plus, you’ll be just a hop, skip and jump away from Rosslyn Chapel and 10 miles from the city center.

My sister actually tied the knot here, and let me tell you, it was a fairy tale come true. We cannot wait to go back!

Best Things in Edinburgh in One Day

Edinburgh isn’t just a pretty face – it’s a city full of surprises! Get ready to feast your eyes on some seriously jaw-dropping architecture, wander through maze-like streets, and gawk at a castle perched on a volcano. And if you think you can’t catch the highlights in a day, you’re in luck! You won’t miss out on a single thing during your one day in Edinburgh, because I’m here to serve up the highlights you simply can’t miss.

Capture the Perfect Instagram Shot at Circus Lane

The most charming street in all of Edinburgh! This cobblestone street looks like something straight out of a storybook. It is located about 30 minutes from the old town city center.

Estimated Time: This is quite a short street, so you can quickly stroll through although if you’re anything like me and love taking photos we spent about 15 minutes here.

BONUS: There is a cute home off of Circus Lane that has steps lined with beautiful potted plants, 33 NW Circus Pl

Stroll The Beautiful Dean Gardens

Take a stroll along the waters of Leith and enjoy the beautiful views at Dean Gardens. This feels like such a lovely little escape from the city! This is the perfect scenic route to Dean Village, and is filled with hidden little gems.

Estimated Time: We made our way here from Circus Lane and headed in the direction of Dean Village, and it took us just over 15 minutes

Bonus: You can find this really cute building (pictured above) underneath the Dean Bridge!

Feast Your Eyes on the Enchanting Dean Village

Dean Village will have you feeling like you’re living in a fairytale! The stone houses from the seventeenth century are like something out of a storybook, and don’t even get us started on that adorable little bridge over the river. It’s just too cute!

Plus, the fact that it’s only a short walk from the city centre makes it the perfect little escape. So if you’re in Edinburgh, make sure you add Dean Village to your must-see list and prepare to be swept away by the charm of it all.

Estimated Time: Although small in size, I would recommend spending at least 30 minutes strolling the streets and taking photos.

Dine In The Beautifully Iconic Dome

Think Gossip Girl with a sprinkle of Harry Potter, this restaurant screams both luxury and magic. Although enchanting all year round, the Dome is truly magical at Christmas time. Make a reservation in the Georgian tea room in advance, it’s absolutely stunning and the food is divine! The price is reasonable for the quality and quantity.

Estimated Time: At least 1 hour to enjoy a beautiful meal here.

Wander Princes Street Gardens

This may sound like some ordinary park, but it’s the most beautiful public park in Edinburgh and you don’t want to miss it! Princes Street Gardens separates old Edinburgh from new Edinburgh and is the heart of the city. And while you are here, make sure to check out the beautiful Ross Fountain. I can confirm it totally lives up to the hype!

Estimated Time: We went on a quick stroll through this park and spent about 20 minutes here but you can easily spend more time or less time here based on preference.

Stop by the Popular Edinburgh Castle

Confession: I didn’t even grace the inside of this castle. We had some local friends show us the ropes and we all agreed that it’s not really worth shelling out the cash. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “but it’s an iconic spot with incredible views!” And I hear you, but trust me when I say that there are better ways to spend your coin. So, to summarize: castle? Maybe not worth it. Views? Priceless.

Estimated Time: 20 Minutes to take in the 360 degree views of Edinburgh and get some great photos!

Catch the Best Views of Edinburgh Castle at the Vennel

There’s a mysterious and enchanting alleyway in Edinburgh that’ll take your breath away. The best part? It’s got a view you won’t find anywhere else, and it’s hidden away. Mae sure to count the steps as you climb up, and stop on the 50th step for the most stunning view of Edinburgh Castle you’ll ever lay your eyes on. Trust me, you won’t regret it. This little alley is the definition of “hidden gem.”

Estimated Time: You can locate this spot through google maps or here. Just a quick walk from Edinburgh Castle and we spent 15 minutes here taking in the views.

INSIDER TIP: You will find the CUTEST ice cream shop just around the corner from this alleyway. Everything found inside Mary’s Milk Bar is locally made daily and the flavors change both daily and seasonally!

Do Some Shopping on the Royal Mile

This cobblestone street was once graced by royalty through Scotland’s history, so it’s no wonder it’s the most famous street in Edinburgh! The mile begins at Edinburgh Castle and ends at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. And while you’re here, you need to visit the Witchery for lunch! It gives just the cutest little Harry Potter vibes. You will want to make a reservation ahead of time.

Estimated Time: You will want to spend at least an hour here exploring. For some tips on what to see and do check out this page

Visit the Real Life Diagon Alley: Victoria Street

A charming, colorful street that is guaranteed to STEAL.YOUR.HEART!!! It’s iconic for both it’s history and connection to the Harry Potter films. You will die when you see all the cute shops!!! And fun fact: this is the inspiration for Diagon Alley. As a result, you will find many Harry Potter theme shops but the best is Diagon House!

Estimated Time: You will want to spend at least 1 hour here, but it’s easy to spend much longer here!!

Stop By To See the Cute Writer’s Museum

When I laid eyes on this charming little museum, I thought the history behind it was just amazing. Scotland has produced some incredible authors, and this beautiful little museum features incredible artifacts from authors Robert Burns, Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson.

Estimated Time: The museum was closed when we stopped by, but if you have time left-over I would recommend spending some time here.

Bonus: Additional spots we wish we would have had time to visit in Edinburgh:

I hope your one day in Edinburgh ends up being perfect! And before you go, make sure to check out my other Scotland guides!
