This Sand Cave Behind the Shell Station has really made its rounds on social media, and it’s easy to see why! It’s found in such an unsuspecting place, which makes it really stand out but I am going to be so real with you…I imagined a much larger sand cave. In fact, when we arrived I wasn’t exactly sure we had found it until I realized people were capturing this sand cave in .5 on their iphones. BUT this was the perfect pit stop on our drive, and it was a pretty little cave.
If you are traveling with your dog, you’ll be happy to know this is a dog friendly trail but keep in mind if you’re visting in the summer please make sure you are putting booties on your dogs paws because the ground can get VERY hot.

To find it, you can start at the Shell station, then walk a short distance along a discreet trail that leads to the cave. The trail isn’t marked, which adds to the sense of adventure and discovery.

The best time to visit the Big Lake Sand Cave in Page, Arizona, is during the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) months. During these periods, the weather is mild and comfortable, making the hike to the cave more enjoyable.
Visiting in the early morning or late afternoon can also enhance your experience, as the play of light and shadow inside the cave is most captivating during these times.
