Puebla is located about 2 hours from Mexico City by car, making it one of the easiest and most popular road trips from the capital.
We loved wandering through the open-air markets here, and it ended up being our favorite place to buy souvenirs—from handmade ceramics to locally made textiles and small gifts that actually felt meaningful.
You can easily see the highlights of Puebla in one full day. If you want to enjoy the city at a slower pace, you can stay the night and see the historic center really shine at night.
Val’Quirico
Val’Quirico is a small, European-inspired village tucked away in Central Mexico, and it honestly took us by surprise in the best way.
Designed to feel like a little slice of Europe, it’s filled with cobblestone streets, ivy-covered buildings, charming cafés, and whimsical details around every corner.
We were completely smitten with this place—it’s unbelievably cute and easily one of the most unique places to visit near Mexico City.
During the day, it’s a popular stop and can feel busy, but once the day crowds leave, the village becomes calm and almost magical.
Walking through the quiet streets at night or early in the morning made it feel like we had the town to ourselves.
There’s even a cute ferris wheel and a carousel, which only adds to the storybook, Europe-meets-Mexico vibe.
Val’Quirico pairs perfectly with Puebla because of how close they are to each other, making them an easy combination on a road trip from Mexico City
San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende is one of those destinations that truly deserves more than just a quick stop. While it’s possible to see the highlights in a day, staying two nights allows you to slow down and really soak in the atmosphere.
Some of the best neighborhoods to stay in are Centro Histórico, where you’ll be within walking distance of the main sights, and Guadiana, which offers a quieter, more local feel while still being close to the action.
Both areas are charming, walkable, and filled with beautiful architecture, making them ideal bases for exploring the city.
When it comes to photo-worthy spots, San Miguel de Allende doesn’t disappoint. The iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel dominates the skyline and looks stunning at any time of day, while viewpoints like El Mirador offer sweeping views over the city’s colorful rooftops.

I actually discovered Tequisquiapan because I have family who live here, and our family reunion was hosted here in July 2025. Before that, I had never even heard of it and I couldn’t believe more people weren’t talking about it!

What makes Tequisquiapan especially worth visiting is its mix of small-town charm and local culture. The main square is lined with pastel buildings, cafés, and artisan shops, and there are often outdoor markets that make it feel lively without being overwhelming.
Tequisquiapan is located about 3 hours from Mexico City by car. It works well as either a relaxed afternoon stop or an overnight stay, depending on how much time you have.
You don’t need a ton of time here—a half day to one full day is usually enough to explore the town, enjoy a meal, and maybe visit a nearby vineyard.
Its easygoing vibe and walkable center make it one of the more underrated places to visit near Mexico City, especially if you’re looking to break up longer drives with something low-key and special.
Bernal
Bernal is a small but unforgettable stop, best known for the massive monolith Peña de Bernal, one of the largest in the world.
You’ll spot it long before you arrive, rising dramatically above the town and giving Bernal its iconic, almost surreal backdrop. It’s easily one of the most unique places to visit near Mexico City.
One of the main things to do here is hike (or partially hike) Peña de Bernal. You don’t have to go all the way to the top to enjoy it—just walking up part of the trail gives you beautiful views over the town and surrounding area.
We actually didn’t have time to do the hike ourselves, so we spent our time simply enjoying the town and honestly, it still felt completely worth the stop.
Bernal is located about 3 to 3.5 hours from Mexico City by car. You really only need a few hours to half a day here, which makes it a perfect final stop before heading back to Mexico City.
If you can, plan your visit around sunset—the golden light hitting the monolith and the town below makes everything feel even more magical.
