We were completely smitten with this place—it’s unbelievably cute and easily one of the most unique places to visit near Mexico City.
During the day, it’s a popular stop and can feel busy, but once the day crowds leave, the village becomes calm and almost magical.
Walking through the quiet streets at night or early in the morning made it feel like we had the town to ourselves.

San Miguel de Allende is one of those destinations that truly deserves more than just a quick stop. While it’s possible to see the highlights in a day, staying two nights allows you to slow down and really soak in the atmosphere.
Some of the best neighborhoods to stay in are Centro Histórico, where you’ll be within walking distance of the main sights, and Guadiana, which offers a quieter, more local feel while still being close to the action.
Both areas are charming, walkable, and filled with beautiful architecture, making them ideal bases for exploring the city.
When it comes to photo-worthy spots, San Miguel de Allende doesn’t disappoint. The iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel dominates the skyline and looks stunning at any time of day, while viewpoints like El Mirador offer sweeping views over the city’s colorful rooftops.

Tequisquiapan is located about 3 hours from Mexico City by car. It works well as either a relaxed afternoon stop or an overnight stay, depending on how much time you have.
You don’t need a ton of time here—a half day to one full day is usually enough to explore the town, enjoy a meal, and maybe visit a nearby vineyard.
Its easygoing vibe and walkable center make it one of the more underrated places to visit near Mexico City, especially if you’re looking to break up longer drives with something low-key and special.
Bernal is a small but unforgettable stop, best known for the massive monolith Peña de Bernal, one of the largest in the world.
You’ll spot it long before you arrive, rising dramatically above the town and giving Bernal its iconic, almost surreal backdrop. It’s easily one of the most unique places to visit near Mexico City.
One of the main things to do here is hike (or partially hike) Peña de Bernal. You don’t have to go all the way to the top to enjoy it—just walking up part of the trail gives you beautiful views over the town and surrounding area.
We actually didn’t have time to do the hike ourselves, so we spent our time simply enjoying the town and honestly, it still felt completely worth the stop.
Bernal is located about 3 to 3.5 hours from Mexico City by car. You really only need a few hours to half a day here, which makes it a perfect final stop before heading back to Mexico City.
