Crystal Lake is a gorgeous spot with crystal clear spring water that’s fed by multiple small waterfalls coming out of the side of the mountain. It’s best to check this Southern Wyoming hidden gem out from June to October. If the weather is good, you can even take a swim, but heads up – the water can be very cold! I was not prepared for how cold the water would be, think cold plunge vibes.
Just a heads up, the road to this lake can be bumpy. If you’re not in a 4WD vehicle and it’s been raining, it might be best to avoid the trip so you don’t run the risk of getting stuck. But if the weather’s good, go for it! We made it without any trouble on a warm summer day. Just keep in mind that it’s very remote out here and there’s no service for miles.
Please drive carefully as this area is a frequent grazing spot for adorable sheep. On our way back to the lake, we had an encounter with some big sheepherding dogs who were only doing their job to protect their flock. They got extremely close to our car, so we had to be super careful to not hit them.
One last word of caution, this lake is deep in the mountains which means there is a chance of wildlife encounters that include moose, bears and mountain lions. Don’t forget to bring some bear spray just in case, and keep your eyes peeled as you visit this Southern Wyoming hidden gem.
