Wyoming’s Crystal Lake At A Glance

Crystal Lake is a gorgeous spot with crystal clear spring water that’s fed by multiple small waterfalls coming out of the side of the mountain. It’s best to check this Southern Wyoming hidden gem out from June to October. If the weather is good, you can even take a swim, but heads up – the water can be very cold! I was not prepared for how cold the water would be, think cold plunge vibes.

Important! Be Mindful of this When Visiting Crystal Lake

Just a heads up, the road to this lake can be bumpy. If you’re not in a 4WD vehicle and it’s been raining, it might be best to avoid the trip so you don’t run the risk of getting stuck. But if the weather’s good, go for it! We made it without any trouble on a warm summer day. Just keep in mind that it’s very remote out here and there’s no service for miles.

Please drive carefully as this area is a frequent grazing spot for adorable sheep. On our way back to the lake, we had an encounter with some big sheepherding dogs who were only doing their job to protect their flock. They got extremely close to our car, so we had to be super careful to not hit them.

One last word of caution, this lake is deep in the mountains which means there is a chance of wildlife encounters that include moose, bears and mountain lions. Don’t forget to bring some bear spray just in case, and keep your eyes peeled as you visit this Southern Wyoming hidden gem.

How To Get To This Swimming Hole (with pictures)

If you’re coming from Jackson, Wyoming, just head south on US Highway 89 for about 83 miles. When you see Forest Rd 10072/Smiths Fork Rd, turn left
drive for about 14.3 miles and the Crystal Lake trailhead will be on the left, you’ll notice a little dirt turn-out so make sure to park there
The trailhead isn’t marked and you won’t be able to see the swimming hole from the road. Keep an eye out for this picnic table though, where you will see a path that leads down to where the trail starts.
the path will take you over this bridge where the path will continue to cut through a beautiful meadow
and you will be rewarded with views of Crystal Lake, a Southern Wyoming hidden gem!

Things To Do and Bring Before Visiting Crystal Lake

  • There is no cell service here, so make sure to download maps offline to avoid getting lost. And don’t forget to notify loved ones where you will be.
  • The nearest gas station is in Afton, which is about 14 miles from Forest Road 10072. Take advantage and fill up.
  • Bring a good pair of water shoes, because there is a tiny, little stream you cross. The swimming hole is also rocky, and you don’t want to enter barefoot.
  • Pack some water and keep some snacks in the car.
  • Make sure to leave no trace behind!
I hope this guide helps you on your journey as you make your way to this Southern Wyoming hidden gem! And while you’re here, check out my other helpful Wyoming travel guides.
