Why is Leland called Fishtown?

Leland is often called Fishtown because of its rich history as a working fishing village dating back to the 1800s.

This area along Lake Michigan was once home to a thriving commercial fishing industry, and many of the original shanties, smokehouses, and docks still remain today.

Exploring Fishtown is one of the most iconic things to do in Leland—visitors love walking through this preserved historic district, grabbing fresh whitefish, and snapping photos of the rustic waterfront charm. It’s like stepping back in time, right on the edge of Northern Michigan’s beautiful shoreline.
